Santiago the protagonist of The Alchemist. He is a Sheppard boy from Andalusia who is in search of treasure in the Egyptian Pyramids. In his journey he meets many interesting people who each contribute to his knowledge of the world takes him to the Tangiers and into the North African desert. Many obstacles in his way will challenge him but due to Santiago’s Bravery, determination and resilience he will manage to find his treasure.

‘’I’m an adventurer’’ Coelho 164. This quote shows that Santiago beholds the will to find his treasure and his bravery because he is willing to wage an adventure in the most dangerous place possible full of dangers from nature and man. Unknown to him the universe is conspiring to help him but not in the straightest way possible to his destiny. Still Santiago tries at the start of the story to go the straightest way there is and not follow the omens. Then he starts to learn to follow the omens this takes a lot of bravery to do because they usually lead problems but in the end they are good for a life experience and this experience helps him overcome his next challenge or help him in his next obstacle. His bravery made him go on this journey and shows that he has bravery because you had to be very brave to leave your country for unknown lands and with a long distance ahead of you. His bravery was also represented when he talked in front of the chieftains of the Soul of the World. Santiago revels his comprehension of Soul of the World and tells the chieftains about the rumor of would true the next day and all the people sheltered in the oasis would die. His bravery was represented when he encountered the alchemist who threatened to kill him but once again Santiago bravery saved and the alchemist didn’t kill and rather invited the boy in his tent for dinner.

‘’The boy wanted to stay with Fatima but knew that if didn’t accomplish his destiny the thought would plague him for the rest of his life and what seemed to be a mirthful life would end up being a miserable one’’ The quote shows Santiago’s dought even against the most important thing in his life which was to meet his love which was Fatima at that point he even tried to convince himself that his destiny was fulfilled and the idea of the treasure was just something put in his mind to encourage to go on the journey. The very determination he possessed got him on the journey because his dreams had reflected the previously unknown destiny that the universe had held for him. King Melchizedek could consider part of that universe in view of the fact that he had told wise comments about destiny, what would happen if you didn’t fulfill or if you did finish it. Santiago took all of the information Melchizedek had told him positively, which is another sign of his tenacious determination. His determination is also tested when he finally gets to the pyramids where he meets the three gravediggers who beat nearly death and tell him to go away. Santiago tells them that the treasure was his destiny. His determination is again tested when he gets robbed at the market, he spends a whole night alone in the dark pondering and questioning his determination to achieve his destiny. He remembers what the king told which was that when you to achieve your destiny all of the universe conspires to help you and that if you don’t finish your destiny at time given you would remain miserable for the rest of your life. Santiago realizes after recapping his encounter with the king and decides to continua his quest. This represents how Santiago is aware of the consequences of his actions and what they meant in the current time and as fate had his understanding of the omens would show on his determination for the treasure and the omens would not always be the straight way to victory stated by king. The looks of his position could have been deceiving for himself but in his heart the sounds of alchemy would prevail over the negative consciousness.

‘’What does the emerald tablet say’’(Coelho 123) this quote shows that Santiago is curious to know about things that he had no idea of. Curiosity helped him achieve his destiny because his curiosity to know what his mysterious dreams of treasure this set a chain of events that eventually led him to his destiny. His curiosity also gave him information about other things of the world. Santiago possess a divined purpose for his active curiosity is his constant awareness of the open-minded person that Santiago is. He isn’t maybe the happiest person, as he already knows because the thought of unachieved destiny is like being a cook who never tastes food from other cultures to come up with a good recipe. People around mention their religion all time so Santiago becomes curious of and asks multiple questions about it even though the people might think he is not concentrated to the subject at hand. The fact is that Santiago was not that curious about anything else except his own destiny therefore arrogant of the things that could conspire and guide his ultimate goal? This best is best shown when he talks with Melchizedek, he first doesn’t really pay attention to him this shows the arrogance in a situation that does not call still Santiago doesn’t care then when the King starts to talk about destiny his destiny specifically he returns to a constant state of conscious towards the person for interaction. This interaction links to the dreams of Santiago and his current sought after destiny that could just be his mere imagination. Santiago curiosity for his destiny allowed his bravery to interfere with his love life which led him to inform her about his feelings and love toward, for any normal teenager this would have been hard to commit to, but for Santiago’s curiosity to investigate and learn his destiny to be able to pursue the right omens.
